We are very excited to announce that the Pratt Institute Library on the Brooklyn campus is now offering access to the digital Sanborn Maps for the boroughs of Manhattan and Brooklyn. The maps are available via a desktop icon on the two Dell PCs near the entrance to the library. Our Computing Systems Manager, Terence McLeod, has installed an excellent image viewer on these computers, so you can zoom, crop, print, and save the maps in a variety of formats. Come try them out, and be sure to stop by the Reference Desk if you have questions or comments.
UPDATE: A quick start guide to using the digital Sanborn Maps is now available at the carousel next to the Reference Desk.

We’ve had a little rash of zebra abuse in the Library lately. Someone has been tearing the barcode stickers out of our books! Maybe the culprits just really want to add to their sticker collections. It seems more likely, though, that they are hoping to steal the books and believe that the zebras hold the key to our security system.
Let’s get that assumption about what the barcodes do out of the way: barcode stickers are simply our way of keeping track of books. They help us quickly and easily check books in and out so that you and your fellow library users can use them as much as possible. Whenever a barcode gets ripped out of a book, it has to get repaired and have a new barcode assigned. This process takes the book off the shelf, out of sight, where nobody can use it until it’s fixed. Please, be considerate of your fellow library users and help us make sure library resources are available for everyone; leave the zebras alone.
Thanks to Marieke Kuijpers for the zebra photo.
